DATES WITH MY DATES

I have never been a man of many words. My
marriage carried its storms, and the brightest part of it was my three children. When
conflicts rose between my
ex-wife and me, I often chose silence. Instead of fighting, I slipped quietly into the refuge of my
music
— a world where arguments dissolved and only melody remained.
That instinct stayed with me. Even now, when I finish dinner and reach for an
ice
cream or a date,
I sometimes hope for another kind of date — one with a nice
woman. But opening myself is difficult. I am shy to the bone, and on first dates my nerves tie my tongue. I sit there almost wordless, and
my silence can seem strange, even unsettling.
This problem follows me everywhere. It takes time for me to thaw. But once the ice melts, something boyish awakens in me — a playful silliness that surprises people, sometimes even makes me look a little nerdy.
It is the part of me that hides until it feels safe.
In truth, I have always expressed myself more easily through music than through speech.
You could lock me in my music room for an entire day — with cold water and a couple of dates — and I would feel no boredom, only peace.
Music
has always been the place where my voice lives, even when my mouth stays quiet. |
